Task-Based Classification

A classification approach that categorizes entities by what they do rather than by their credentials, titles, or other descriptive attributes.

In occupational classification, this means a worker is coded based on the tasks they perform, not their job title, degree, or certification. A “Senior Associate” and an “Analyst” doing identical work would be classified identically, while two “Managers” doing different work would be classified separately.

The principle generalizes beyond occupations: categorize by function, not by label.
