HITL-Autonomy Inverse Relationship
Human-in-the-loop involvement (H) is formally defined as the inverse of autonomy (A):
H = 1 − A
Where H = 1 represents full human control (zero autonomy) and H = 0 indicates complete AI autonomy.
This formalization captures a fundamental tradeoff in human-AI systems: you cannot simultaneously maximize both human oversight and AI independence. Increasing one necessarily reduces the other. The design question becomes where to position the slider, and whether that position should be static or dynamic.
